Capitalism and its Critics: A History From the Industrial Revolution to AI by John Cassidy 2025, 581 pp. Nowadays some folks see capitalism as a failure leading up to Trump, while others see its successes in such areas as AI as the way we will all be saved. This history tells the story of capitalism through a structure emphasizing its many critics, to show that some problems have been known for a long time, and some of them go to the heart of our current discontents. Anybody who thinks capitalism is “the problem” with inequality and polarization should probably be familiar with this book.
